Matthew Anchel
Bass Matthew Anchel (he/him), called “a voice to watch” by the Wall Street Journal, was a Grand Finalist in the 2013 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. During the 2018-20 seasons Matthew joined the ensemble of Oper Stuttgart singing leading roles in multiple productions. He spent the summer of 2019 at the Glyndebourne Festival, covering Sarastro in The Magic Flute. Prior to Stuttgart Matthew celebrated his fourth year on the Metropolitan Opera roster, covering in new productions of The Exterminating Angel and Cendrillon. Future engagements include his debut as Banquo in Verdi’s Macbeth with Stadttheater Giessen, Sarastro in The Magic Flute with Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck, a return to Staatsoper Stuttgart, performances of the Mozart Requiem with Stiftskirche Stuttgart and a return to the Metropolitan Opera. He has worked at other companies both in the United States and internationally including LA Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Oper Leipzig, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Spoleto Festival, Carnegie Hall to name a few. Mr. Anchel also has a large voice studio where he teaches singers who have appeared on Broadway and in major opera houses around the world as well as singer-songwriters, actors performing regionally and Off-Broadway and amateurs who just love to sing. When he is not teaching and singing opera he can be found on TikTok, where he has over 800,000 followers, performing in Cabaret Venues singing showtunes, writing original music, creating music videos, and working with Tracy Cox on their web series Angry Fat People.
