Vartan Gabrielian
Canadian-Armenian bass-baritone Vartan Gabrielian is a current ensemble member of the Canadian Opera Company. During the 2020-2021 season Gabrielian will be performing with the Canadian Opera Company as Titurel and Second Knight (Parsifal), Kuligin (Katya Kabanova), Dr. Grenvil (La Traviata), along side other roles which he will understudy.
Gabrielian is a recipient of numerous awards including Encouragement award winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Competition, Gerda Lissner Foundation, George London Foundation, recipient of the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation Competition and Career-Bridges/Schuyler Foundation grant holder.
The 2018-2019 season marked Gabrielian’s North American Debut with Opéra de Montréal in the role of Sparafucile (Rigoletto.) Gabrielian was a 2018 Santa Fe Opera apprentice covering the roles of The Bonze (Madama Butterfly) and Groves (Doctor Atomic).
Featured roles include Leporello and Commendatore (Don Giovanni) with Opera Philadelphia, title role of Sweeney Todd with Curtis Opera Theatre, Sparafucile (Rigoletto) with New Jersey State Opera, Colline (La Bohème) with Curtis Opera Theatre and Chautauqua Institution, Gremin (Eugene Onegin) with Curtis Opera Theatre and Cappadocian (Salome) with Detroit Symphony. Additional roles include Bertrand (Iolanta); Alidoro (La Cenerentola); Der Lautsprecher (Der Kaiser von Atlantis); Eustazio (Rinaldo); Betto (Gianni Schicchi); Nick Shadow and Trulove (The Rakes Progress); Figaro and Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Masetto (Don Giovanni), and Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte).
