On Site Opera proudly presents the revival of its modern take on the holiday classic, Amahl and the Night Visitors, in a production that connects this timeless story of charity and miracles with the prevalent issue of housing instability in NYC. Presented at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, and in partnership with Breaking Ground, New York City’s largest provider of permanent supportive housing for the housing unstable, performances will feature a chorus made up of community members who have experienced housing vulnerability performing alongside renowned opera soloists and musicians.

With this revival, On Site Opera, Breaking Ground, and Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen hope to continue to shine a light on the issue of housing vulnerability in New York City, and share how the arts and social services can work together to benefit our community.

We ask patrons to bring a small donation of non-perishable food items to be donated to the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. Our volunteer ushers will be ready to receive your food donations upon arrival to attend the performance. We thank you for helping us support this crucial meal service program!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Running time: Approximately 45 minutes
Language: Sung in English, with supertitles in English, Spanish, and Mandarin through the On Site Opera app.
Audiences will be seated in chairs for the duration of the performance.
Performers will move throughout the space, including all sides of the audience.
There will be minimal audience interaction.

After each show, there will be a reception with apple cider and cookies. Please join us!

COVID POLICY

All audience members must be masked at all times while inside the venue, except when eating or drinking during the post-show reception. Proof of vaccination will no longer be required.

Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen is the largest soup kitchen in New York and has been a symbol of hope and compassion in the Chelsea section of Manhattan since 1982. Every weekday about 1,000 nourishing meals are served to hungry and homeless New Yorkers who dine in the beautiful sanctuary of the landmark Holy Apostles Church. In sixty years, no production of this opera I have attended captures the essence of Amahl better than this revival by On Site Opera. This company has become an essential element in the exciting renaissance of small-scale lyric theater in New York today. Its specialty is “site-specific” opera: immersive performances to small audiences in non-traditional everyday spaces.
